In the last couple of years I have worked closely with the RBS Fraud Team to produce a number of short videos to create awareness of the different types of banking frauds that their customers needed to be aware of.

Business fraud is a complex and fast moving problem, with fraudsters constantly adapting their scams to try and stay one step ahead of the banks.

Vishing (voice phishing or telephone fraud) is a technique used to gain banking details such as card numbers or PIN codes. In recent years, investment in fraud prevention technology has significantly reduced the number of Vishing cases; so in response, fraudsters have adapted their tactics.

Instead of asking for personal information, they call pretending to be from the bank’s fraud prevention team, saying that the customer’s account has been suspended due to suspicious activity. They then ask the customer to make a “test” payment into a holding account to make sure their own account is still working.

Videos created for the RBS and NatWest websites, YouTube channels and banking fraud conferences, use simplicity and clarity to hit their message home. In less than two minutes, the videos demonstrate how the scam works and explain exactly what the customer needs to do if they think they are being targeted.

From an initial briefing meeting, I normally devised four creative concepts and once a route was chosen, a draft script was created and developed plus a detailed storyboard. Following sign-off, we produced an animatic edited to a voice track, to ensure the client was 100% happy before going into the production phase.

With the ‘Bogus Boss’ scam fraudsters monitor a businesses email activity, the fraudsters get the name and email of someone senior within the company and create a fake email that looks like it's come from that person. Then they send it to someone in the finance team.

The email asks for an urgent payment to be made to a new account and usually gives a realistic reason, such as it's needed to secure a new contract. Of course, the account is in the hands of the fraudsters. And the money gets taken out almost as soon as it's put in.

The videos have been hugely successful in educating both RBS and NatWest customers about the tactics fraudsters use to target companies.

I was responsible for concepts, storyboarding, animatics, music, sound, motion graphics, colour grading and editing.

The videos were published through 2017 and by March 1st 2018, had already been viewed more than 10,000 times.
