Decode: Digital Design Sensations

Spent an afternoon at the V&A this week taking a look at the Decode: Digital Design Sensations exhibtion that is currently on.

Really reminiscent of the early experimental Macromedia Shockwave and Flash work that came out in the 90’s by the likes of Anti-Rom, Joshua Davies (Who exhibits), Tomato, Show Studio etc.

For me the best work was the Processing exhibits, even though it’s been around for a while I think it’s time is coming and it’s gonna really take off. Worth a visit to the V&A go take a look.

The Third & The Seventh

The Third & The Seventh is stunning piece of CGI by Alex Roman. I don’t know much about the history of this but it must have consumed a monster number of hours to produce. You get an idea of how much effort has gone into this by watching the composition breakdown.

Amazing to think that everything in the film is computer generated and that it has been produced on a desktop machine by one person.

Knox-om-pax

Some really nice work on Konx-om-Pax.co.uk by Glasgow based Director/Animator/Sound Designer Tom Scholefield. You can view his latest reel here. In recent years he’s worked with Warp Records, Universal Everything and Optimo Espacio. He’s had work shown in Tokyo, Egyptian Theatre Hollywood, Buenos Aires, Cannes Lions, Florence, London and Glasgow. Konx-om-Pax has recently been featured in Grafik Magazine and has been awarded a prize of Best New Blood in the annual D&AD awards. Go check it out people.

The PEN Story

Had your fill of stop motion movies? Well even if you have this one is still worth a couple of minutes viewing pleasure. Completed for Olympus cameras and in their own words – This is The PEN Story in stop motion. We shot 60.000 pictures, developed 9.600 prints and shot over 1.800 pictures again. No post production!

Flight Patterns

I came across this whilst having my lunch and surfing around the web going off on many tangents. I love the complete randomness of the flight patterns, such a hectic amount of energy in a very small area.

A collection of 156 photographs by film maker Charlie McCarthy, each image is a four second exposure. They have been animated and edited together to create this cool movie.

8-bit trip

8_bit_trip_01

This is the best stop motion movie I have seen in recent months. According to the details on You Tube it took 1500 hours to make 8-bit trip. A labour of love that must have taken over someone’s life for a while.

The attention to detail and camera work is very good, I must admit to thinking some of it must be CGI for a while.

Aardman at Harvest Towers

aardman_01

The lovely Jenny from Aardman came in today to do a presentation on how Aardman are getting involved in the online landscape. A great range of work for a number of varying clients (some suprising as you would never have guessed it would be a Aardman production)

Jenny also brought in the original Wallace & Gromit from Curse of the Were Rabbit!, Shaun the sheep! and Morph! Amazingly we were allowed to have a little play with them and they are fantastic.

It’s at times like this you are reminded why you love working in the creative industry, all the team suddenly turned into slightly giddy 12 year olds.
