I have just been watching these amazing timelapse videos that are part of an upcoming feature film. Because most of us live in highly populated areas with lots of light pollution we hardly see many of the stars visible to the human eye. I spent a night on Dartmoor earlier in the year and was totally captivated by the amount of stars in the sky.
Amazing high res footage all shot on a Canon 5D mkII, go check it out at Timescapes.org and over at Vimeo. Can’t wait to see this on a large screen or an iMax version would be incredible.
This isn’t supposed to be a morbid start to Friday but whilst having a browse over at FormFiftyFive I was completely captivated by Tony Wilson’s Headstone by Peter Saville and Ben Kelly. In time honored tradition it was three years late.
I had the great fortune to meet and chat to Tony Wilson a couple of times when he ventured down to London to visit Malcolm Garrett when I worked at AMX. I always thought he was a genuine really nice bloke, very passionate about music, design, culture and especially Manchester. He was controversial and always divided opinion, but I don’t think people can argue that he is greatly missed.
The other headstone image is of the legendary American graphic designer Paul Rand.
Incredible art installation by SOFTlab at Bridge Gallery NYC. The installation is made of over 4600 laser cut panels each a different shape with a unique color. The panels are connected by over 17000 bulldog clips. More images on Flickr.
I spend quite a lot of time at my desk as do a lot of designers. Does it reflect my state of mind? What does it say about me? If my desk is messy is my mind? I think the state of my desk is most reflected by how busy I am but I really like this short film.
A lot of people at Deskography are pretty proud of their workspaces.
Multi monitor porn if that’s your thing!
To some of us oldies that remember back to the Betamax v VHS war and the beginnings of DVD the recent sad news of the demise of old faithful Blockbuster came as a bit of a shock, I guess it was inevitable in this digital age.
It was mortally wounded in it’s last few years with tough competition from Netflix, Redbox, LOVEFiLM and the like, and the killer blow will have come from the phenomenal rise in web video, and people downloading from p2p networks.
The rise and rise of web video continues unabated. A few facts:
24 hours of web content uploaded to You Tube every minute One third of all web traffic is video, by 2013 it is predicted to be 90%!
Alongside this rise of power come technical innovations that enable brands and agencies to be creative with video like never before. A great examples is the recent Tippex – NSFW A hunter shoots a bear! video that went viral.
The TED talk above is pretty inspirational, Chris Anderson says the rise of web video is driving a worldwide phenomenon he calls Crowd Accelerated Innovation — a self-fueling cycle of learning that could be as significant as the invention of print. Crikey!
WTF?, Crazy but cool were my thoughts when this was the first link I viewed this morning. Apparently it’s a performance piece by the artist Willi Dorner “a moving trail, choreographed for a group of dancers.”
Thanks to Mr Hobbs for the link, if you’re interested in front end development check out his Nooshu blog, it’s pretty incredible.
I only found out about this yesterday, the Anti Design Festival is happening around Redchurch Street in London’s Shoreditch. Apparently there are a host of exhibitions, installations, workshops, performances and talks in Art, Design, Product, Film, Sound, Fashion, Performance, Print and Interactive etc.
This is what the website has to say “As a response to 25 years of cultural deep freeze in the UK, the Anti Design Festival will attempt to unlock creative fires and ideas, exploring spaces hitherto deemed out-of-bounds by a purely commercial criteria. Created initially as a direct response to the pretty commerciality of the London Design Festival, the festival will shift the focus from bums-on-seats to brain food, and from taste and style to experiment and risk.”
I got a link to this info-graphic yesterday from Roz one of Harvest’s user experience team. Interesting and surprising facts on the average ages of people on and using social networks.
A big misconception is that they are dominated by the yoof, the fastest growing demographic are the over 50′s who are embracing technology and new communication channels at a significant rate.
I like to create and design nice useful things using lots of digital cleverness. This blog is a random collection of projects, thought pieces and inspiration
