Francesco Franchi

  • Nov 25, 2010

Ok so I am obviously like a moth to the flame with info graphics but Francesco Franchi’s work is far too nice not to share with everyone. An Art Director for ‘IL — Intelligence in Lifestyle’ he has amassed a pretty nice body of work.

Lovely Flickr photostream, I like the fact that he has taken the time to photograph his work properly, nice attention to detail.

U&lc lives

  • Nov 16, 2010

A lovely post on the Creative Review blog, U&lc lives. U&lc launched in 1974 was the most important typography publication of it’s time. Hugely influential and still standing the tests of time, Monotype Imaging are making editions available to download in PDF format.

For all the type geeks out there this is a must have edition to your collections.

Can you draw the internet?

  • Nov 12, 2010

Here’s a challenge that’s pretty irresistible but the stakes are high! Can you draw the internet? So who’s more imaginative the creative industry or a bunch of 10yr olds?

I think i’ll sit down with my 3yr old and see what we both come up with at the weekend. I think i’ve gone into competitive dad mode, his better not be as good as mine!

Timescapes

  • Nov 02, 2010

I have just been watching these amazing timelapse videos that are part of an upcoming feature film. Because most of us live in highly populated areas with lots of light pollution we hardly see many of the stars visible to the human eye. I spent a night on Dartmoor earlier in the year and was totally captivated by the amount of stars in the sky.

Amazing high res footage all shot on a Canon 5D mkII, go check it out at Timescapes.org and over at Vimeo. Can’t wait to see this on a large screen or an iMax version would be incredible.

Designer headstones

  • Oct 29, 2010

This isn’t supposed to be a morbid start to Friday but whilst having a browse over at FormFiftyFive I was completely captivated by Tony Wilson’s Headstone by Peter Saville and Ben Kelly. In time honored tradition it was three years late.

I had the great fortune to meet and chat to Tony Wilson a couple of times when he ventured down to London to visit Malcolm Garrett when I worked at AMX. I always thought he was a genuine really nice bloke, very passionate about music, design, culture and especially Manchester. He was controversial and always divided opinion, but I don’t think people can argue that he is greatly missed.

The other headstone image is of the legendary American graphic designer Paul Rand.

And I’ve just become a fan of…

Desk

  • Oct 15, 2010

I spend quite a lot of time at my desk as do a lot of designers. Does it reflect my state of mind? What does it say about me? If my desk is messy is my mind? I think the state of my desk is most reflected by how busy I am but I really like this short film.

A lot of people at Deskography are pretty proud of their workspaces.
Multi monitor porn if that’s your thing!

Digital killed the video star

  • Sep 30, 2010

To some of us oldies that remember back to the Betamax v VHS war and the beginnings of DVD the recent sad news of the demise of old faithful Blockbuster came as a bit of a shock, I guess it was inevitable in this digital age.

It was mortally wounded in it’s last few years with tough competition from Netflix, Redbox, LOVEFiLM and the like, and the killer blow will have come from the phenomenal rise in web video, and people downloading from p2p networks.

The rise and rise of web video continues unabated. A few facts:
24 hours of web content uploaded to You Tube every minute
One third of all web traffic is video, by 2013 it is predicted to be 90%!

Alongside this rise of power come technical innovations that enable brands and agencies to be creative with video like never before. A great examples is the recent Tippex – NSFW A hunter shoots a bear! video that went viral.

The TED talk above is pretty inspirational, Chris Anderson says the rise of web video is driving a worldwide phenomenon he calls Crowd Accelerated Innovation — a self-fueling cycle of learning that could be as significant as the invention of print. Crikey!
